What counts as “street dance”?
We acknowledge the foundational “street dance” culture developed by Black and Soulaan peoples like breaking, popping, waving, etc. and its connected foreparents, descendants, and customs.
We also acknowledge the reality that street styles can also exist within other cultures and fusions like martial arts, flow arts, etc.
We also acknowledge the street has also been a necessary home for dancers who cannot not afford to train at traditional studios, so they must do “studio styles” like ballet, jazz, etc. in the streets.
KCSD invites all forms of creativity and history the streets bring– all styles are welcomed!
Why was Knox Community Street Dance started?
Knox Community Street Dance was started by local dancer and artivist Maddei (@funkyashido) to keep her connection to street dance alive and well and to spread joy and wellness through movement in Knoxville!
Knoxville has had a plethora of street dance and hip hop groups, from Volatomix, to Southern Sole to Cypher 865 and to the many other dance groups and movements that came before those. Street dance has been a way for Knoxville to build community and express joy for generations, and we want to see this continue and inspire the community to find their people, make and meet some crews, and groove!
Knox Community Street Dance also has a particular interest in using street dance as a way to engage with Black/Soulaan Culture and History, addressing Black/Soulaan erasure in the arts and dance, as well as using dance and joy as an activism tool. Some inspiration for this comes from the following:
Although support for Knox Community Street Dance is always appreciated, don’t forget to support and learn about other dance organizations, clubs, and movers in town as well. Knoxville has a lot of dancing gems and if you’re having trouble finding them– reach out and ask us about them!
