“Dance is my preferred method of engaging with the world. The communal energy and knowledge I have experienced and gained through dance flows into all parts of my life. Dancing has connected me with my environment, my body, my culture, my ancestors, my higher self, and with an amazing interconnected web of movers and shakers everywhere advocating for a life of joy.

LEADERSHIP BOARD

Jaleria R. | Empress Lisonia | Special Events Lead

Styles & Strengths: Transnational Fusion Belly Dancer (inspired by North African belly dance, animation, and Indian classical)

Dance magnifies my inner goddess—unlocking a new power, control, and bodily wisdom with each breath. I seek the utmost state of flow when I dance because I transcend into a pure state of love, acceptance, and understanding. I practice fusion because it’s a lovely movement cocktail inspired by all that surrounds me. Through fusion and freestyle dance, I continue to surprise myself and discover new connections.

Notable KCSD Actions

  • Co-founded KCSD “Community Jam” events
  • Provided an opportunity for the collective to have a safe space to dance through Artist Co-Op partnership within SpaceCraft
Ty M. | DJ Ty Dye | Opportunities Lead

Styles & Strengths: Vinyl DJing, Vogue (old way)

I feel like Rapunzel when I’m DJing – spinning music live is like letting down my hair & welcoming people to climb up and get down inside a groovalicious and funktastically curated world. As a longtime vinyl collector, finding good records has been like finding buried treasure. It’s a special feeling to see a whole room or even one person dance at a show, a sign that the “gold” you’ve discovered and played that night has been acknowledged and appreciated.

Notable KCSD Actions

  • Co-founded KCSD “Community Jam” events
  • KCSD’s resident and first DJ
Kyra D. | Hititdee | Content Co-Lead
Bryana E. | SweetBusyBe | Content Co-Lead
Jules H. | Julez | Lab Lead

Styles & Strengths: Popping, Hip-Hop, Memphis Jookin, Animation, Litefeet

“Dancing really helped shaped me for who I am and really just helped me through obstacles and made me understand myself a lot more, found purpose for consistently being on the grind with trying to level up my dance and really just want to get better and better. Dance has added more intention and really bring certain vibes into the environment and inspire others as ell.”

MORE OF THE CLUB

Sandra W. | ☀️

Styles & Strengths: Qi-Gong, social scuplting

“My life is my art. My social practice is influenced by social sculpture where everything is art and everyone is an artist. I weave a tapestry of Qi-Gong, Kenyan freedom songs, and my sacred soul light in my movements to radically engage the world within and around me. I move for joy, for liberation, for connectedness and a return to harmony.”

Notable KCSD Actions

  • Co-sculpted the participatory performance piece “The Search for Community Continues”
Noah B. | Arc

Style(s): Likes to dabble in a little bit of everything– Animation, Krump, Contemporary, Ballet, Tap, Waving, Popping, Ticking, Bone-Breaking, B-Boying, and still always incorporating and learning more

“I personally love to dance because it is my escape from reality, a way to get out your emotions and be free. Almost literally lifts stress and weight off your shoulders, making you feel weightless and grounded all at the same time.”

Jayden B. | Javill

Styles & Strengths: B-boy, House, All Styles

“Dance is more than just an art form to me. Dance is a way of communicating and expressing to others through movement. That movement can consist of many things– and the freedom to use that creativity to convey a message to your audience, highlights the beauty of dance and why it means so much to me.”
